Paul Daugherty, former SOU security officer, passed away April 11, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson's, according to information received from his family. His memorial service was April 19 at Eagle Point National Cemetery.  Paul was a veteran, having served five years in the U.S. Navy as an aviation metalsmith and as a master-at-arms at Crow's Landing, which was the starting point for his career as a security officer.
 
He spoke fondly of the university and its staff, and there were many memories he frequently talked about of the college and the friends that he had there. Many at SOU referred to him as "The Gentle Giant." Even in his last year, when he was still able to get out and about, he would always ask to be driven through the campus.  It seemed he never forgot his nightly watch duties.
