Dick Moore Obituary

Richard Eugene (Dick) Moore, 86, of Medford, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, in Medford.

Dick was born May 21,1932, in Abilene, Kan., and graduated from Abilene High School. Shortly thereafter, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton during the Korean War.

Dick received a bachelor of arts degree from Fort Hays State College in Kansas, a master of science degree in history from the University of Kansas and a master of library science degree from the University of Oklahoma. His career as a university librarian began at Iowa State University, followed by service at Portland (Ore.) State University, the University of California at Santa Cruz and Southern Oregon State College, where he held the position of director of library services. Following his retirement from SOSC in 1986, Dick owned and operated the Back Alley Bookstore in Ashland, traveled throughout the country and became a tireless volunteer for the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

Dick is survived by his wife Sheila Whitesitt, Medford; son Fr. Michael Moore, Hilmar, Calif.; daughters Lisa Moore (Jim Long), Ashland; Jennifer (Curt) Formolo, Medford; and Suellen Ireland, Alaska. Also surviving are grandchildren David Formolo, Central Point; Danny Formolo, Medford, and Kelly and Justin Ireland, Alaska.

No services are planned. Those who wish to honor Dick’s memory are asked to consider a contribution to the Southern Oregon Historical Society.
