William C. Bushnell Obituary

William C. Bushnell OCEANSIDE -- Dr. Bill Bushnell passed away at his home in Oceanside, Calif., on Monday, April 19, 2010. He was born November 27, 1921 in Venice, Calif., and graduated from Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School in 1939. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 as an underwater mine and bomb demolition specialist. Following the war, Bill completed his BA degree from Fresno State University. He then received both his Master's Degree and Doctorate in Education from Columbia University, New York City, NY. He served as Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts and head of the Music Department at Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah; Chairman of Doctoral Studies at the Graduate School of Church Music of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; Chairman of the Music Department, Southern Oregon University, Ashland, Ore.; and choral clinician and conductor in 41 states. He was awarded a teaching fellowship in oratorical literature at Oxford University in London, England. Bill was always active in church service as a devoted Minister of Music. Upon returning to the West coast, he served as Director of Music at the Ashland, Oregon First United Methodist Church, and the Fallbrook, Calif., United Methodist Church. He composed and arranged vocal literature for a variety of ensembles. His touch and skill on the piano keyboard were greatly admired. After his retirement from academia, he and his wife combined their talents to present piano/organ concerts in California and Oregon. Bill was an avid golfer and loved flying. He was extremely proud of earning his commercial, multi-engine and instrumental ratings in general aviation. Bill is survived by his wife, Virginia; step- children, Scott Davis (Stacy); and Cassandra Kellogg; sister, Lorraine Kelly; four grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Fallbrook United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fallbrook United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 1844 Winterhaven Dr., Fallbrook, Calif. 92028, or to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest Drive, Escondido, Calif. 92025."
